If you ask people if they have ever made bread, most of them bulk at the thought and say that they have never worked with yeast. They hate the thought of all that time and patience needed for rising and kneading …. Groan, rinse and repeat. And then you happen to come across a baker that gives you a recipe on how to make bread that is yeast free. Well of course we just have to try it and my oh my, the words delicious and easy come to mind.

Basic Recipe for yeast free bread

  • 500 g self-raising flour
  • 1 packet onion soup
  • 125 ml grated cheese to sprinkle on top of bread.
  • 500ml Buttermilk
  • 1 egg

Mix the dry ingredients together and the wet ingredients together. When they are both thoroughly mixed add them together and you will get very sticky dough. Hope you have strong arms this takes some doing. After you have prepared your baking tray, add the dough and sprinkle cheese on top. Bake in a preheated oven set at 180 degrees for about an hour. Different ovens have different baking temperatures so check your bread often after half an hour. You can change the recipe up by adding your own ingredients into the basic recipe, add olives, spinach, feta, onion, garlic…..in fact anything that takes your fancy. It is great to have fun with this recipe.

It smells good and is just waiting to be eaten…..now let’s look at some ideas on what to make this bread extra special.

Infused Olive oil and balsamic vinegar makes an excellent dipping sauce instead of butter or margarine, such a simple way to make your bread even moister.

Olive tapenade goes great with any bread or biscuit and adding some of your olive tapenade to hummus makes it go further.

Olive and cream cheese topping: Spread your bread with a thick layer of cream cheese and then add your olive topping. We can go wild here and add all our favourite flavours to your chopped olives. Try some different flavours by adding, garlic, red or green peppers, capers… the list is endless.

Olive oil, olives, balsamic vinegar and bread make very good partners when it comes to appetizers or just a quick snack for those unexpected visitors. Homemade bread does not stay fresh for long as there are no preservatives in it. Slice your bread and lay it on a baking tray, drizzle with olive oil and bake it till crispy. Healthy homemade and delicious!
